Hartford Athletic has signed 22-year-old midfielder Luka Prpa pending league and federation approval.  

After a decorated collegiate career at Marquette University, Prpa played his rookie season with Western Conference side Rio Grande Valley FC Toros in 2020. He appeared in ten matches, starting seven, and recorded two goals and an assist in 569 minutes. He was also tied for second on the team with thirteen chances created.  

During his four years at Marquette, Prpa was named All-Big East First Team, All-Big East Second Team (2x), All-Big East Freshman Team and Big East Freshman of the Year. He scored 18 goals and had 21 assists over four years. The Houston Dynamo selected him with the 34th overall pick of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. In his youth career, Luka was a member of the U-14, U-15, and U-17 national teams. 

“Luka is exactly the type of player I wanted to bring to Hartford,” said Hartford Athletic Head Coach Harry Watling. “He is technically and tactically capable of carrying out the philosophy we want to implement and a player who will give everything for the shirt. He’s young, fearless, and exciting with the ball and shows bright imagination. We have a good one in Luka!” 

Hartford Athletic has now signed the following players for the 2021 season: 

Forward: Alfonso Vazquez 

Midfielder: Nii Armah Ashitey, Danny Barrera, Conor McGlynn, Luka Prpa, Arthur Rogers, Gabriel Torres 

Defender: Younes Boudadi, Thomas Janjigian, Alex Lara 

Goalkeeper: Jeff Caldwell, Carlos Merancio

Tigres becomes first North American club to make the Club World Cup Final  

Tigres fell to European champions Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Club World Cup Final in Qatar on Thursday. Despite the loss, the Liga MX club made history. Tigres became the first CONCACAF club (The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) to make it to the final of the Club world cup. 

How did Tigres get to play the Champions League winners Bayern Munich in the final? The Mexican club needed to win the CONCACAF Champions League to qualify for the Club World Cup, which they did back in December defeating MLS side LAFC 2-1 in the final. The player who scored the winning goal in that game was André-Pierre Gignac. • Health and Wellness  

• Youth and Family Education  

• Diversity and Inclusion  

• Veterans and First Responder Support  

• Economic Development 

“From day one, Hartford Athletic has aspired to deepen our roots in the community, enhance the lives of those in need, and work hard every day to make our home the best place to live, work, and play,” said Hartford Athletic Chairman Bruce Mandell. “The Green & Blue Foundation will allow us to continue to deliver on this mission. Over the past two seasons we have hosted and participated in hundreds of community events and programs in our community. We are excited to take this to the next level with the launch of the Foundation.” 

The Green & Blue Foundation, which has already raised over $100,000 in donations, seeks to promote hope and growth throughout Connecticut by delivering programs that enhance the lives of all in our community. New initiatives in development for 2021 include:  

• Veterans and Diversity Hiring Expo 

• STEM & Soccer Education Day 

• Changemakers platform  

The Changemakers platform is focused on identifying inequities and implementing change in the community. Changemakers will kick off with a Women’s Leadership Series in conjunction with the United Nations Global Goals World Cup team to focus on Global Goal #10, Reduced Inequalities.  

In just its first two seasons Hartford Athletic and its corporate partners have worked together to make a major impact on the local community. Notable programs include donating over 20,000 meals to Foodshare, raising almost $30,000 for Girls for Technology and Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford via the Annual Match for a Cause, supporting 15 local businesses impacted by COVID-19 through Shop For a Cause, and more. 

“We can’t say enough about the great work Hartford Athletic does for us at Foodshare,” said CEO Jason Jakubowski. “Between the Goals for Meals program and the Shop for a Cause program, Hartford Athletic has helped us distribute more than 20,000 meals in central Connecticut over the past two years. We cannot thank them enough.”

This past week, Leyton Orient dealt with some adversity and hung on for a good point against Crawley Town. All odds were against the O’s after young midfielder Hector Kyprianou was sent off in the 30th minute. The defensive work of left-back and man of the match James Brophy stood out. He and his backline held strong and grinded defensively until the final whistle to get the point away from home.  

This past week, Orient also announced the return of striker Tristian Abrahams on loan until the end of the season. This will no doubt be a boost to the O’s frontline as star striker Danny Johnson is sidelined due to injury. The O’s academy product featured in the 2017 season and found the net 18 times in 78 appearances in the 2019/2020 season for Newport County.  

Abrahams could make his return to the starting lineup this weekend as Orient host Colchester United on Saturday. Kick-off will be for 3 PM GMT, 10 AM ET. The O’s are currently in 10th position in the table and are only three points off of the promotion playoff positions.

Hartford Athletic may have found its next starting goalkeeper, with the club announcing Wednesday that it has signed Jeff Caldwell for the upcoming USL Championship season.

Caldwell spent the 2020 season as the New England Revolution’s third-string goalkeeper, slotted behind incumbent Matt Turner and veteran backup Brad Knighton.

The 24-year-old isn’t guaranteed the No. 1 role by any means – Hartford also signed Carlos Merancio after time with FC Tucson in USL League One – but he’ll have every chance to impress new head coach Harry Watling before the 2021 campaign gets underway.

“You can train as much as you want, but if you want to be successful you need to build a critical mass of game experience in order to progress and be where we all want to be, which is playing at a high level into your mid-30s and beyond,” Caldwell said via a Zoom interview. “That’s my number one goal for the year, to train well so that I can earn the time in the games and hopefully build consistency and be part of a winning club. That’s a little bit of a clichéd answer, but sometimes clichés ring true.”

Caldwell returns to the USL Championship after spending the 2019 season on loan with Memphis 901 FC, making 28 appearances for the then-expansion team. The former U.S. U-20 international was at New York City FC after being selected in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Virginia, though couldn’t nudge past Sean Johnson, who’s part of the US men’s national team player pool.

While Caldwell has seesawed between the country’s first and second divisions, he knows how challenging the season ahead can be. He’s not entering with ego after getting exposed to MLS.

“The first thing you have to do is respect the league,” Caldwell said of the USL Championship. “It’s a quality league, it’s a difficult league to find success in. It’s not just being consistent in your habits and play, but being consistent in how you’re aggressive and competitive every game. It’s not a league that forgives a night off because there’s a lot of parity.”

That humility surfaces as Caldwell reflects on his season with New England, too. He feels that he progressed while learning alongside Turner and Knighton, even if first-team minutes didn’t arrive.

Caldwell might have been loaned to Revolution II (USL League One) under normal circumstances, but COVID-19 pandemic protocols around player movement made that difficult. He said there was a mandatory 10-day quarantine period when switching teams, though both teams used the Revolution’s training facility in Foxboro, Mass.

“There’s no third ‘keeper who’s happy being third choice,” Caldwell said. “You’re always working to progress no matter what spot you’re on the depth chart. But for me, the delicate balance is working as hard as possible to climb out of that hole while also understanding that one of the most meaningful ways you can contribute is by always putting the team first. You’re the guy, if someone needs extra reps, you’re staying after.”

Should Caldwell beat Merancio for the starting role, he’d give Hartford a solution post-Parfait Mandanda. The Congolese goalkeeper spent 2020 on loan from Belgian side Charleroi as the Blue & Green made the playoffs for the first time. Caldwell is also the second Hartford goalkeeper with Revolution experience after Cody Cropper (now with FC Cincinnati in MLS) played nine times while on loan during the 2019 season.

Now, as more signings get announced, Hartford plans to convene for preseason in mid-March. The USL Championship aims to start competing in 2021 on or around May 1, with the league divided into four divisions for a 32-game schedule.

“There’s a methodical approach here, both in management and the hiring of coach Watling, to build something that lasts,” Caldwell said. “It’s not just on the field, but an overall approach of development and who we’re going to be as a club. That’s exciting to be a part of.”

AL: My Favorite moment from last season would definitely have to be winning against Red Bull 2 to win the group and get to playoffs. It was a goal we set early and felt great to achieve that after all the adversity of last season. 

Favorite Soccer player you watched growing up

AL: My Favorite soccer player to watch growing up would have to be Puyol. The eternal captain was a great defender that embodied everything needed to be a Leader on and off the pitch. 

Favorite Athletes to watch (not soccer)

AL: I have several different athletes I enjoy watching outside of football. Watching champions or greatness in any sport is a hobby of mine. Kobe Bryant, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, and Lewis Hamilton all serve as inspiration for me. All are superb athletes and despite them being in completely different sports, I find it very interesting how a champion's mentality is universal and can be applied to any sport or task. 

Favorite training exercise/drill

AL: I’d have to say small sided games are one of my favorite drills to do. It’s very fast paced and involves continuous offense and defense to win. This drill also is very useful in chemistry building and working on getting out tight spaces. 

Favorite Music genre

AL: One of my favorite music genres has to be hip-hop, especially old hip-hop music. Living on the west coast you pretty much grow up listening to a lot of old school stuff like Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. Whenever I listen to it makes me think of LA and where I’m from. 

Favorite TV series

AL: I’m not into a lot of shows like that I think I’m more of a movie guy but my Favorite TV series would have to be, Seinfeld. Even though the show came out a while ago and sitcoms can be a bit cheesy, I just find that show hilarious. The comedy style and the characters like George Costanza make the show so relatable and funny. Recently, I did enjoy watching The Mandalorian.

Favorite travel destination

AL: One of the best places I traveled to was Costa Rica, it was extremely beautiful. I was fortunate enough to go with my family and spend quality time with just them, something that’s always important to me.

Favorite Connecticut restaurant

AL: Think my favorite restaurant in Connecticut that I went a lot to was Poke City. It’s similar to sushi and healthy so I would go there pretty often.

We head to Italy for the game of the week as rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan battled in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals. Zlatan Ibrahimovic put AC Milan in front in the first half before being sent off in the second and reducing Milan to 10 men. Inter took advantage of the opportunity with a penalty from Romelu Lukaku and a late, stoppage-time winner from unlikely hero, Christian Eriksen. Inter advances to the semifinals where they will face a red-hot Juventus. While Juventus has only lost once since November, that came at the hands of Inter 2-0.

Hartford Athletic has signed Goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell pending league and federation approval.  

Caldwell comes to Hartford after a year with the New England Revolution of the MLS. He played the 2019 season with Memphis 901 FC while on loan from NYCFC. He made 28 appearances for Memphis with 6 clean sheets and a 1.5 GAA over 2,520 minutes played. He stood in goal in the second home game in Hartford Athletic history, a 2-1 win for visiting Memphis on May 10 at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. He was drafted by NYCFC in the first round of the 2018 MLS Super Draft out of the University of Virginia where he earned All-ACC honors in back-to-back seasons. 

On the international stage, Caldwell earned one cap with the United States Under-20 Men's National Team in 2015, and also featured for the U-17 and U-18 national teams. He was a member of the United States’ 2013 Concacaf U-17 Championship squad, and was also named to roster for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but did not see game action.

• Streaming access for fans to both clubs’ games  

• Content creation and challenge series activations between players, coaches, and fans 

• Cultural exchange providing fans the opportunity to visit the clubs in their respective cities for VIP matchday experiences and more 

“Hartford Athletic is thrilled to partner with Leyton Orient, one of the most storied clubs in the world,” said Hartford Athletic Chairman, Bruce Mandell. “As we enter our third season, we are excited to continue to grow in all facets of our operation on and off the field. The USWNT Does Not Miss!

The US women’s national team picked up right where they left off in 2020 dispatching Colombia four goals to nil this past week. Fans in Orlando were treated to a five-star performance, the only kind we’ve come to expect from the World Cup Winners.  

There were some standout performers in this match but those with the last name Mewis stole the show. Sisters Sam and Kristie Mewis played a part in every single goal, Kristie with one of her own and Sam  with her first hat trick at the international level. Sam, a Manchester City attacker, is solidifying herself as one of the best goal scorers in the world. At Manchester City, Sam Mewis plays with USWNT teammates Rose Lavelle and Abby Dahlkemper who have just recently joined the fast-growing Barclays FA Superleague.  

There was also a highly anticipated debut made by Brazilian born-American Catarina Macario. The skillful Stanford alumni plays at club level for one of Europe’s best teams, Olympique Lyonnais, in France. The winger has been compared to retired Brazilian legend Marta Vieira da Silva (Marta) and has shown glimpses of what a bright future she has ahead. Macario had fans on the edge of their seats and they’ll be looking forward to seeing more of her in the future.   

On the other edge of the age spectrum, Veterans Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe made their returns to the national team. The duo both contributed an assist each and still provide exceptional experience and skill for head coach Vlatko Andonovski. With the Olympics on the horizon, the USWNT players are competing for the limited spots and the players mentioned in this article will surely be at the top of that squad list.
