Hartford Athletic have signed midfielder Joe Schmidt ahead of the 2024 season, pending league and federation approval.
The 25 year old holding midfielder comes to Hartford after spending his first two professional seasons with the Charleston Battery. He made the team after a successful showing as a trialist in the Carolina Challenge Cup, a four-team round robin pre-season competition hosted by the Battery. He impressed in his 2022 rookie season, totaling 29 appearances and recording 17 clearances, 16 interceptions, 20 tackles won and 71 duels won. In 2023, he was a part of a dynamic midfield that helped take Charleston to the USL Championship Final.
“Joe is a hardworking young player who is off to an impressive start in this league,” said Hartford Athletic CEO Nick Sakiewicz. “We love his aggressiveness and tenacity, and the options he gives us with his ability to play in the midfield and in the back. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can add to our squad.”
Schmidt played collegiately at Indiana University, where he helped lead the Hoosiers to the NCAA College Cup Final in 2020 and captained the team as a senior in 2021. In his time in Bloomington, the Hoosiers won three consecutive Big Ten doubles (regular season and conference tournament title in the same year) from 2018 to 2020.
