Hartford Athletic fell behind Detroit early in the first half of tonight’s match and were unable to respond with any goals of their own, eventually losing the match 3-0.
Hartford had the first dangerous scoring chance of tonight’s match via Antoine Hoppenot. In transition, Kembo Kibato led a perfectly weighted ball ahead to Hoppenot in-stride. The former Detroit City FC man lofted his left-footed shot high and on target, but Nathaniel Steinwascher made an acrobatic diving save against his former teammate. The rebound fell to Elvis Amoh and he challenged Steinwascher, forcing him to make another save at the near post.Â
After the early chance from Hartford, Detroit answered with two goals. Conor Rutz put a shot on target in the 24th minute that was saved by Joe Rice, but the rebound spilled in the box. Dario Suárez was there to scoop it up, and placed his shot into the bottom right corner. Seven minutes later, Detroit was given a free kick in the attacking third. Maxi Rodriguez delivered a quality ball to the back post, and Michael Bryand drove his header up and past Joe Rice.
Hartford created one more chance in the final minute of the half. Kembo Kibato found space in the Detroit box and fired a shot from inside the six yard box, but Steinwascher made another quality save at the near post. The Green and Blue went into the half down 2-0.
Like the first half, Antoine Hoppenot was involved in Hartford’s first scoring chance of the second half. He chased down a ball from Andre Lewis and lifted a cross into the box to Elvis Amoh, who’s header went off target. With the ball still in the box, Rito’s follow up header was blocked and then scooped up by Steinwascher.
Detroit City added an exclamation point with their third goal in the 57th minute. Lewis received a corner kick from Brett Levis, flicking his shot to the goal line and it trickled past Joe Rice.
Hartford took five more shots, but couldn’t find the back of the net. They out-possessed Detroit, had more final third entries, and more touches in their box in total. Steinwascher had an excellent night for Detroit, denying all five of Hartford’s shots on target. 3-0 was the final score.
Athletic have a quick turnaround, as they host the Tampa Bay Rowdies this upcoming Wednesday, September 27th. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.Â
