Hartford Athletic have acquired defender Modesto Méndez via transfer from Inter Miami CF II of MLS NEXT Pro. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Méndez comes to Hartford after spending the last three and a half seasons with Inter Miami CF II, formerly known as Fort Lauderdale CF. He made 45 appearances from 2020 to 2023, scored two goals, and recorded an assist. In March of 2022, he received a call up to Inter Miami’s First Team.
“Modesto is a tough defender that will bring speed and some bite to our back line,” said Head Coach Omid Namazi. “He has all the qualities you look for in a defender, but is especially physical and has great ability to win balls in the air. We’re excited to see him make an impact for us.”
A native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Méndez has made nine appearances with the Cuban National Team, most recently featuring in three Gold Cup matches this past June. He made his senior debut in June of 2021 in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, helping his side to a 1-0 victory.
“Modesto is a talented center back who will help us improve in the back,” said Technical Director Ray Reid. “He is an excellent athlete and a strong leader with experience at some of the game’s highest levels. We are very excited to bring him to our club.”
Mèndez will be available for selection this Saturday, August 5th, when Hartford Athletic host New Mexico United at 7:00 PM. Tickets are still available at hartfordathletic.com/tickets.
